Waskia language
My love poem is translated here into Waskia (Woskia, Vaskia), a language of Papua New Guinea, spoken by 10,000 to 15,000 people.
This non-Austronesian language is part of the Kowan group, itself belonging to the Isumrud language group, which is a branch of the Madang languages.
Because the speakers are fairly close together, their language shows few dialectal variations.
They live mainly in the northern region of Karkar Island. A few others live north of Madang.
Karkar Island is a very fertile volcanic island in Sumkar District, Madang Province. A 75km arm of the Bismarck Sea (the Isumrud Strait) separates it from the mainland.
